Home Made Holidays {Grandparents 2}

I decide that Even though the Necklaces are beautiful.  Grandpas are probably not that interested.  So I came up with this little beauty for him.
I found these little frames at Michael's in the dollar section.
They started out looking like this.

Not to bad.  The colors were simple and nice for Christmas.  But I need a little more flair so I did this.
Add  a little paint and a magnet on the back, a couple of Grandpas favorite kids and voila. A fun easy little gift Gramps will love.

Keep them on the fridge or these could also be great for an office space for any guy.

Check out today's give away on this post.
It includes a set of these frames and a few more things.
Don't for get to leave a comment to get entered.

Home Made for the Holiday Day 6 For the Ladies

I was at a craft show and a local vendor was selling jeans and jewelry.  All was manufactured.  When you bought a pair of jeans you got to choose a piece of jewelry.  I found a necklace I loved and she ended up getting it with her purchase.  I decided to recreate it with a little twist.  Here is what I cam up with.

Home Made for the Holidays for the Girl

Home Made for the girl... I saw a dress liked this on pinterest and just couldn't pay the price. So with my mad sewing skills I came up with this.

Supplies:
Fabric 2 different prints
1 inch elastic for waist band
matching thread
ribbon about 3 yards
embellishements
about  1/2 yard scrap fabric or just white fabric

I made my skirt to be a size 4-5
You will need to cut 3 pieces.
Waistband (24x45)
Skirt body (15x45)
Skirt top (12x45)
I decided I wish I would have made the top 15x45 as well to get more gather when finished.

Take your waist band and sew the short ends together.  Making a a band.
Make a 1 1/4 inch hem. Leave a 1 inch opening for threading elastic through later.

Take the skirt body and sew the short ends. To make a a tube. Hem the bottom with a 1/4 inch rolled hem. Set your skirt body and waist band.

Cut 2 inch strips.  For a 15 length skirt I cut 5.

I ran the raw edges through my serger just to clean the edges.
Hem 1 short edge. This will lay with the hemmed edge of the top skirt.

Take the top skirt and hem the bottom edge.Your fabric should be one length.
Measure the fabric into sections For 45 inches I measured mine 8 1/2 inches. Lay one of your strips down and pin.

Stitch down each edge of the strips. Then down the center. Dividing the strips into 2 sections.
Fold fabric with right sides together.

Stitch down along the edge. Leaving about 3/4 inches from edge to seam.

Press open seam. Stitch down, Making a pocket wide enough for your ribbon.
Looking something like this when you are finished.

Turn  skirt body right side out.
Now is when you thread your ribbon into the pockets you just made.
Stitch around the top to secure the ribbons in place.

Pin both fabrics together.  Using a basting stitch around the the top of the skirt. About 1 inch from the top. Pull the top thread and gather the skirt until the skirt fits the waistband.

Once the skirt is gathered and fits the waist band. Pin the two together.

Sew the waistband to the skirt.

Thread the elastic into the waistband. Stitch the elastic together and close the waistband.

All finished.  Just pull your ribbons and gather the top skirt.

Perfect for  little girls who love to jump and twirl.

Thanks for joining me for Home Made Holidays.  Don't forget to come back tomorrow for a fun Kid craft.

Home Made for the Holidays For the Boys

For Christmas this year I wanted to try something a little more traditional for clothing.  Since my baby is so little I decided that this year he would have a bow tie to match his sisters skirt.  He is to little to complain.  I love how it turned out.  A little guy in a bow tie is my favorite.
Day Two

I love Christmas time.  So many exciting things just waiting to happen.Yummy Food, Christmas shopping, parties and so much more.  This little tutorial will help dress that little man of yours (or big boy) for an
special occasion. Holiday Bow tie!

You will need:
1 fat quarter
3 inches of hook and loop tape
thread.
I used the template from Martha Stewart  bow tie tutorial.  (Here)
I says to enlarge 200% I only enlarged mine by 175% for my little guy.  200% is a little to big
 for kiddos under 6.
I also added about an inch to the length of the pattern piece.  Since I am not sewing the two tie parts together, I need a little extra on the ends to add the hook and loop tape.

Fold fabric so that your fabric is 4 thick.
Lay your pattern piece on the fabric and pin.
If you are going to fussy cut fold your fabric in half and place your pattern piece where you want it.

Once you have your piece pinned where you want it cut out your bow tie.

Separate your tie pieces.  Place two pieces right sides together. Pin.

Stitch along the outside edge of the tie piece.  I use the edge of my presser foot as a guide. Do this for both pieces.  Clip the edges of you bow tie.

Turn you tie pieces right sides out.  Use a small stick or tip or your scissors to push corners out.  Press.

turn raw edges to inside of tie for a clean edge. Press. Cut a 3 inch piece of hook and loop tape. Lay the hook and loop on to the edge of the tie piece. Pin and stitch around the edges of the hook and loop tape.
Your tie is done. Its time to tie it.  I looked at several tutorials for tying a bow tie. I found that a video was the best tutorial.  You can find more on U Tube or the Martha Stewart site (Here)

Here is the result.  Its a little big for my little man but oh so cute!
Just in time for Christmas.

Making your own bow tie is easy.  For today's give-a-way I will be giving away my tie pattern with
4 extra clips.  Not a seamstress.  I will make one for you.  Bow tie or adjustable neck tie.  You pick.  I have lots of choices.

Angry Birds Update

Angry Birds Update
I have been working with my little birds and decided I wasn't happy with the piggies.  I decided they were more work than they were worth.  Then I had an idea.
They don' have to be fabric.
I did a little looking at my local craft store and found small wooden knobs.  Like the ones you put on Dowel rods or use for doll heads.
I found some beautiful green paint for 99 cents and I am off and running again.

My boys were fighting over who got to paint them and my little miss lets just say she wanted in on the action too.

I free handed the faces and Voila! Little Green piggies for the Angry birds to catch.

My kiddos arew very happy wiht the result and so am I.  They have been playing Angry Bird a few hours everyday since I made them.  Its great.  They have turned it into a competition. He who leaves a piggie standing has to build the blocks.  Its actually quite entertaining.
Here are a few pictures of my Birdies close up.

I used ribbon for the cream bird and the black bird as feathers and a fuse.  Make sure you burn the ends of the ribbon so it doesn't unravel.

I hope you are all enjoying your Angry Birds.  My kiddos area still in love!

Angry Birds

My boys love Angry Birds.  I thought I would make something fun for them for Christmas.  Then I was asked to do a local Bazaar.  I thought they would make a great gift for a cute little guy or gal.  So I decided to get a jump on it.  Here is my take on Angry birds the bean bag toss.

The birds are all 2 dimensional and the piggies are 3 dimensional.
Step 1: First I ironed Pellon to one side of the felt.
2: I cut the birdies from the templates below.  And stitched around the edges. Leaving a small hole for the poly fill pellets.
3: Then put them back through the machine to close them.
4: I then cut out the eyes, beaks and brows by hand.
5:Then glued eyes, beaks and brows with my trusty glue gun.

The piggies were a little more work.  I wanted them to be able to sit on the blocks.  I sewed 3 small circles together so that they would have a bottom gusset to sit on.  Then hand stitched the eyes, nose and mouth onto the fronts. I think next tiem I am going to make the piggies out of wooden doll heads. Paint them green and free hand the eyes and mouths.
Update for Piggies

Add a set of block and some special little guy or gal will be busy all afternoon building and tossing birds.

I thought this would be a great birthday or Christmas gift!

Princess Aprons

So I saw these little cuties on a website the other day.  I thought they were totally cute and I am a sucker for princess stuff. I only have One little girl. I kind of give into anything girly.  Until I saw the price tag.  $25. Way to much for this mama to pay.  So I made my own. It only cost me about $8 and about an hour to make 2 of them.  So today you get Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty!

What you need for one:

1/2 - 3/4 yard fabric (color depends on the princess)
1/4-1/2 yard fabric for extras
Thread

I cut my main fabric into sections. 13 inches for skirt, 5 inches for sash.  If I made this again I would buy and extra 5 inches to make my sash longer.

Next cut your extras. in this case the hip puffies ( not quite sure what to call them)
1.I started with cutting 4 rectangles 9 1/2 wide x 6 1/2 long.
Then I rounded 2 bottom edges.
Stitch around 3 sides. Clip rounded edges before turning.
Turn, Press and topstitch.
3. Gather the top.  I gathered mine to be 6 inches wide finished.

Next I folded my sash to have a finished edge.
1. Fold top left corner to right side lining up edges.
2. Fold top right corner to left edge. (You should have a triangle on the end of your sash)
3 Press.
4. Fold in half and press.
At this point I folded the straight edges of my sash  a 1/2 inch on both sides and pressed them to prepare for stitching everything together.

Okay so here I missed taking a picture.  But Its really simple.  I gave my skirt a little hem around 3 sides.  1 long (45 inches) and both short (13). About a 1/2 in.  I turned 1/2 inch and pressed then another 1/2 inch and pressed.
Across the non hemmed edge I did a basting stitch as large as I could to do my gathering. Leave you threads a little long for this.  Pull one thread and begin to gather you fabric.  When you have it the length you want tie the threads in a knot to hold it till you can stitch it. My skirts finished length after gathering was about 18 in.

I then added my puffies. Placing them each on center. Pin them into place.
Take your sash find your center and match it up with the skirt. Pin the wrong side of the skirt
to the right side of the sash.
Sew the sash puffies and skirt together.
Once done fold the sash over onto the skirt. Start at the end of the sash and stich to the other end.  As you stitch you will be finishing the sash and top stitching the sash to the skirt and puffies.

When your finished it will look like this! I added a fabric twisted rose to the center to give it a little more glam.  My little miss loves it!

I was thinking these would make a great birthday gift or party favor for a Princess and her guests!
I think next time I may make a Belle, Tinker Bell or Alice in Wonderland apron.

Easy Peasy Father's Day Gift

So Father's Day is coming quick and have trying to think of something quick and easy for the kids to make. My kiddos are pretty fortunate kids.  They have both sets of grandparents living and 3 full sets of great grandparents living.  So need less to say we are pretty busy around Mother's Day and Father's Day.  Lots of card making and treats to go around. So we need something Quick, Easy and Cheap when you are getting things for multiple Dads.  (I am big on recognizing all the Dad's, Grandpa's, Papa's etc...)
This is what I came up with!

Supply List

3 rolled candies (Rolos, Mentos, Large Gi-normous Smarties) You get the picture.
1 sheet red paper
Tape or Glue
1/2 yard twine, yarn or ribbon
Small tag

Cut you red paper the same length as you candy. Leaving a 1/2 inch on end of paper for folding over.

Tape the paper to the candy along one edge and roll.  Tape rolled edge closed.

Cut twine or yarn. 3 strips of 2 inches. Glue 2 sticks together. Place twine in center and glue 3rd stick on top.
Wrap remaining twine around dynamite adding your tag.
Your tag can read My Dad is Dynamite!
Or Grandpa.
Something cute from the kids and yummy for Dad!
